more guns part 2...

To continue the theme of yesterday: arguments against guns and my responses to them.

I don’t have a problem with people owning guns, I just don’t see why you need to have a _____________.(fill in the blank with a scary gun, such as an M-16 or AK-47)  I’ll let everyone in on a little secret- how the gun looks or how many rounds it holds does not make it more dangerous then a pink, bolt action rifle.  ANY gun in the hands of an irresponsible person is capable of severely injuring or killing a person.  It’s like taking a stick of dynamite and painting one yellow with flowers on it, and another one black with flames and demons on it.  Is the yellow one with flowers any less dangerous than the other?  I think this argument comes from a lack of knowledge of guns.  People will say that these types of guns, especially the AK-47 have a more dangerous caliber of bullet than other guns.  This is simply not true.  The AK-47 fires the 7.62mm round, which is a relatively small round.  Most hunting rifles fire a far larger and more powerful round, such as the .30-.06, a far larger and much more common hunting round.  The M-16/AR-15 shoots an even smaller round, the 5.56/.223 (they are not the same, they are slightly different rounds).  In fact, this round is sometimes referred to as a “varmint” round, cause it’s mostly good at killin’ ground critters, like rats, prairie dogs and rabbits.  Others will say that what makes them dangerous is the magazine capacity- sometimes 30 rounds.  I honestly don’t understand too much of why this is a big deal, something about being able to fire more without reloading… I’ve got news for you- if it takes you more than 2 seconds to throw another magazine in the firearm you probably wear a helmet and ride the short bus to school.  So the amount of ammo it holds doesn’t really ring true to me as sufficient basis for a ban.

Well, I had more written, but to be honest this subject is boring me for now…since this is my domain  I will cease writing about guns.  I have not really read any comments any have made, so perhaps I will.

On the other hand, Sharel and I might be getting a dog here in the next couple of weeks.  It is a big dog, one that will eat small children and skinny people.  (I am just kidding, the dog has no taste for adult, skinny humans).  Any way, she is a chocolate color and about 7 or 8 months old.  We are not real sure that we are going to get her, but we are going to check her out.  We are excited.  She was picked up by animal control from the owners who were moving and didn’t want to take her with.  The good news is she is young enough to still socialize and have it benefit her.  Like I said, it is up in the air right now, but we would sure like to get her if she fits with us.

Peace- I’m out.

Now Danny, I don't really believe in outlawing guns, and I agree with just about everything you've said, but I do have to take exception with one of your arguments. It's the case you made regarding the difference between AK-47's and hunting rifles and hand guns and what-not.
Different guns are designed for different things. If you're hunting a deer, the best gun is one that can shoot one bullet a good distance accurately. That would be a rifle. To finish off an injured deer, you need a smaller gun that can deliver a killing blow at a short distance. That's a small hand gun. Shot guns for birds, plasma cannons for aliens, you get the idea. I think people's problem with AK-47's and their like is that they are "assault rifles." They are designed to shoot many rounds at multiple targets. Basically, they're designed to kill lots of people. It would certainly be what I would choose if I needed to do a drive-by shooting, or take out the rival gang/mafia family, or if I got dropped in a swamp and had to pick a weapon to kill the other 10 guys who had been dropped there at the same time and only one of us would be allowed to make it out alive...
I'll stick with my baseball bat when I need to sneak up on you.

Please elaborate- what makes an assault rifle an "assault rifle"? Is it the number of rounds it holds? Is it the caliber? Is it the look of the gun?
You said they are designed to shoot many rounds at multiple targets. So I am assuming it is because it holds a lot of bullets, and that is the criteria for it being an assault rifle.
Your comment also leads me to believe that you are ok with guns as long as it is for hunting purposes only. What about sport shooting? Like skeet shooting. Or perhaps competition target shooting? Is it ok to have a firearm that can hold multiple rounds for those types of things? What about for personal protection? Should a firearm one wants for self defense be limited in the number of bullets it holds?
And one more thing- you said an AK is what a criminal would choose to do things illegal. That is my point. You think Tony Big Lips is gonna go down to Cabelas and buy an AK? No, he will obtain one illegally. So the law abiding citizen is punished because a criminal likes to use an AK.

Besides, I have mongoose like reflexes, you could never sneak up on me.

I'm ok with sport shooting. Not being a gun enthusiast myself, I'm not sure what kinds of guns are used. Pretty much the same as hunting, right? Shotguns for skeet, handguns for those rapid-fire target shooting events at the Olympics. Right? I don't know of any sporting events that use Uzzi's and what-not.
You're right that most criminals use handguns to take out Tito or whatever. You're also right that criminals are not going to buy their weaponry at the Bass Pro Shop. However, they might buy their weaponry from the guy who bought his weaponry at the Bass Pro Shop.
I'm thinking about the Mexican drug wars which are happing along our border in which THOUSANDS of people are being killed. Yes, most of those people are Mexicans and many of those are in Mexico (so they don't really count as people), but I'm pretty sure a lot of the guns are coming from the US. I don't know how many of those guns are AK-47s.
Again, I'm not even sure if I think an outright ban on assault rifles is a solution. I just don't like the idea of bad guys having them. If good guys can have them, it makes it easier for bad guys to have them.
I dunno.
